サーカスの都 モントリオール
モントリオールは、シルク・ドゥ・ソレイユを中心とする、サーカス屋パフォーミングアーツが盛んな街だ。団員になることを目指す学校も数多くある。9月18日、私達はTOHUという施設にサーカスを見学しに行った。
TOHUは、ジャリーという駅から2キロほど離れた場所にある。道中は、周りに高い建物はなく、飲食店がちらほらとあるような街並みであった。施設は、本館とサーカステントの2つあり、飲食店も備えていたので公演までの時間を過ごすには困らないだろう。本館には、チケット売り場だけではなく、以前はサーカス会場として使われたホールも併設されており、そこでは様々な企画が行われていた。通常時は、美術館として様々な作品を展示していた。30点以上の絵画や彫刻があり、十分な見応えがあった。基本はフランス語であるが、英語での説明も記載してあったので、私達にも理解しやすかった。また、1日に2回ほどそのホールの一部を使ってローラースケートを使ったショーも行われていて、男性1人と女性1人が華麗な滑りを見せていた。観客は、立ちながら、もしくは床に座りながら観覧し、目の前まで迫ってくる彼らのショーに盛り上がっていた。共に流れる音楽もその公演の魅力の1つでギターの音がローラースケートの技とマッチし、幅広く楽しまれるものとなっていた。
ローラースケートのショーが終わるころには、私達の目的であったサーカスが始まる時間になっていた。サーカステントの入り口には、本当に入りきるのかと思うくらいたくさんの人が並んでいて、家族で来ている人がほとんど全員であったように感じる。
さて、本題の内容であるが、私はサーカスというと数人の人が自分の得意とする技を次々と見せていくものだと考えていた。しかし今回観覧したものは、50代くらいの男性デイビッド・ディミットリさんが一人で様々な曲芸を披露するものだった。この公演の自分たちのイメージとは違った形式にまず驚かされた。デイビッドさんは、高速ランニングマシーンに乗っての激走や、梃の原理を駆使した大ジャンプ、さらには綱渡りとその見た目からは想像できない数々の技を見せてくれた。合間にはユーモアを交え、客席の子どもをステージに上げてショーに参加させるなど、観客とのつながりを大事にしようとする姿勢が感じ取れた。最後には、デイビッドさんが人間大砲でサーカステントの屋根まで飛び、そのまま屋外に出て20mほど綱渡りをして、下から見上げている観客の写真を撮り、ショーのフィニッシュとなった。約1時間のサーカスは、見とれるうちにいつの間にか終わってしまっていた。
モントリオールにおいて、サーカスやパフォーミングアーツは地域や家族と密接に結び付き、大きな役割を持っているのだ。ほんの一部であるが、今回のSVで知ることができた。
Circus City Montreal
Montreal is often called city of circus and performing arts. The headquarter of Cirque-du-Soleil, famous new type circus, is in Montreal. And, there are a lot of schools for training circus members. September 18, we went to TOHU to watch them.
TOHU is apart from Jarry station about 2km. There are main building and circus tent inside the site. And also a restaurant, where we can spend time. In the main building, a large hall normally used as a circus stage is arranged for an exposition and multipurpose space, and various events were held there. A lot of art works were put on display as museum on usual time. More than thirty pieces of picture and sculpture are exposed in this space and I think we do not need spend boring time before opening the performance show with watching these pieces.
Also, half-an-hour-show by two performers wearing roller skate was held in twice a day. Man and woman were amazingly skating. The audience was excited on it in sitting on the floor or in standing. The performance was accompanied with wonderful guitar music. So I think this show should be fun for various generations.
Next, we moved to circus tent to watch a circus titled “Homme-Cirque (the Circus Man)”. The line waiting at the entry of the tent was really long, and most of them was family. I imagined that circus was a show carried out several performers showing each favorite talent. However, this show “Homme-Cirque” was configured by only one person “David Dimitri” whose age seems about fifty. I was surprised at the gap from what I imagined. His performance was running on high speed conveyor, jumping with a principle of leverage, walking on a tightrope. He has a sense of humor and pays attention to interact to the audience. Therefore, I feel that his policy to treasure them. Finally he jumped to the roof by a cannon fire, furthermore he went outside the tent and was walking on a tightrope about 20m high on the ground. At last, he takes a picture of the audience from high place. The show running about one hour ended
I felt strongly in this city, Montreal, circus and performing arts are very essential of community daily life by staying in the TOHU on this short visit program.
