日本人女性を魅了する少女アン
－グリーン・ゲイブルズ－
9月22日、スタディーツアー7日目。私たちはプリンスエドワード島国立公園内のキャベンディッシュにあるグリーン・ゲイブルズを訪れた。不朽の名作『赤毛のアン』の舞台である。
『赤毛のアン』は1908年ルーシー・モード・モンゴメリにより出版された。モンゴメリは、1874年11月30日、キャベンディッシュ近くのクリフトンに生まれる。1歳9カ月のとき結核により母を亡くし、キャベンディッシュに家を持つ母方の祖父母に育てられた。父の再婚やハリファックスにある大学進学などプリンスエドワード島から出入りを繰り返すが、1902年故郷キャベンディッシュに戻る。祖母の世話を終え、36歳で牧師と結婚しトロントに住む。そして1942年、自殺により、モンゴメリは67歳で生涯を終える。
グリーン・ゲイブルズで、私は何組かの日本人観光客を見た。『赤毛のアン』は世界でも特に日本人女性に愛されている。物語に登場する自然、家具、食べ物、服装すべてが日本人の目には新鮮に映った。現代に生きる私でさえ、アンの家や内装は現実離れしたおとぎ話の世界のものに感じられた。また主人公アンも魅力的だった。勝ち気で自由に生きる少女が、女性の社会進出を象徴するかのように活躍し、最後には友人ギルバートと結ばれる。社会でも恋愛でも女性としての成功を勝ち取ったアンは、日本の少女たちの憧れの存在となった。華やかな異国の文化とパワフルに生きる女性の姿が、日本人女性の心を掴んだのだろう。そしてそれはモンゴメリにとっても同様で、自身が果たせなかった女としての理想を生きたヒロインがアンだったようだ（小倉千賀子『「赤毛のアン」の秘密』2014より）。
「赤毛のアンの家に行きたい」と言うと、あそこは何もないよ、と言う現地の人がいた。島の人たちにとっては、ただの原っぱや切妻屋根の家でも、「アンが過ごした」というフィルターがかかった私たちには特別な景色に見える。例えば、恋人の小径。一見すると「Lovers Lane」という看板が立てられているだけの自然の道であった。それでも物語を知る人にとっては「ここがあの恋人の小径か」とカメラのシャッターを切らずにはいられない。
プリンスエドワード島で、私はアンをモチーフとした土産をよく見かけた。アン目当ての観光客が多いことが窺える。日本でそして世界中で愛され続けるアン。アンは、物語としての影響だけでなく、今もなおプリンスエドワード島の顔として社会に貢献していた。
Anne who fascinated Japanese women -Green Gables-
On September 22th, the 7th day of our study tour, we visited Cavendish “Green Gables” in Prince Edward Island National Park. This is a set of the famous story “Anne of Green Gables”.
”Anne of Green Gables” was published by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908. In 1874 on November 30th, Montgomery was born in Clifton near Cavendish. When she was a one year old, her mother was dead from tuberculosis, so her maternal grandparents who had their house in Cavendish took care of her. She went in and out in Prince Edward Island because of her father’s remarriage and her going to university in Halifax, but she came back Cavendish of her hometown in 1902. After she finished taking care of her grandmother, she married a minister and lived in Toronto at the age of 36. In 1942, she was dead from suicide.
We found some Japanese tourists in Green Gables. “Anne of Green Gables” is loved by everyone in the world especially Japanese women. They feel everything- natures, furniture, foods and dresses in the story- fresh. I who live today feel that like a whole new world, too.
Also Anne is an attractive girl. The girl who lived strongly and freely succeeded as a symbol of women’s entry and married Gilbert- her old friend- at last. Anne made a success of a career woman and a woman, so Japanese girls are attracted by her. It seems that gorgeous foreign cultures and an active woman moved their hearts.
In Prince Edward Island, we found many souvenir of Anne’s motif. It seems that there are a lot of people who are looking for Anne. Anne is loved all over the world. Anne contributes to society of Prince Edward Island as an island symbol not only a story effect but also now.
